Designing the renovation of an existing branch library was a unique challenge for MCM. There were budget limitations and the client had strong needs and desires to see the functionality of the spaces changed to meet the expectations of library users; how a library works has changed greatly over the years due to automation, computerization and the trend to self-serve processes. Further, the library suffered from a lack of a strong identity and required specialized areas for young readers and those who read in languages other than English. The end result of the renovation is a true metamorphosis. Strong curves and ellipses create a homey atmosphere, define extensive reading lounges and soften the role of long rows of bookshelves and other media storage. Clean maple millwork unifies what could otherwise be the visual clutter of books and a sophisticated red and charcoal colour scheme gives the space a fresh and contemporary feel. Varied lighting sources enhance the experience of all users while browsing, searching or reading.
